Federal Stimulus

The 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act promised to create jobs while rebuilding critical infrastructure.  Investment in existing infrastructure is critical to preserve our existing communities. Some states used funds were spent bringing bridges and roads to a state of good repair, while others  used the grants to create new roads and highways. 

Transportation Reform Act / South Coast Rail / Federal Transportation Authorization / Federal Stimulus

The ARRA and federal officials identify nine goals for ARRA transportation funding:

  1. Create and save jobs

  2. Fix our crumbling infrastructure

  3. Modernize the transportation system

  4. Promote long‐term economic growth

  5. Improve public transportation

  6. Reduce energy dependence

  7. Cut greenhouse gas emissions

  8. Not contribute to additional sprawl

  9. Reduce commute times and congestion

Massachusetts spent 20% of its funds on new roads, spending the rest repairing existing infrastructure or investing in public transportation and non motorized transit.
